SUMMARY:Show Off Your WordPress Site 2018
DESCRIPTION:In order to see more sites than we did last year\, what we need is for the volunteers to choose ONE (1) feature of a recent site to demonstrate. We’ll distribute the URLs of all the sites so people can check them out in more detail after the meeting. \nWhat to Include in Your Presentation \nHere are some suggestions for what to talk about in addition to just showing us around the site. \n• Type of project (e.g. e-commerce\, membership\, portfolio\, news\, multi-purpose\, application built on WP) \n• What made you choose this project to demo? \n• What was your primary role in the project? (E.g. design\, development\, project management\, content strategy/development\, front-end\, back-end\, everything) \n• What problem were you solving for the client? (Or for yourself\, if it was your own site.)

SUMMARY:How to Conduct an SEO Audit with John Locke
DESCRIPTION:There are sites that offer free “SEO Audits” that identify a few of the glaring problems with your site\, but comparing those to a professional SEO Audit is like comparing Wix to WordPress. \nThe SEO audit is the first step in a long-term SEO campaign. It identifies what’s working\, what’s not\, and where the site’s SEO can be improved. \nIn this presentation\, John Locke\, SEO consultant at Lockedown Design & SEO\, will walk through how he does in-depth SEO audits for clients. \nSome things he’ll cover in this special session: \n– What things he looks for when it comes to increasing rankings\n– How content is arguable the most important factor in rankings\n– Why your link profile is still important to Google\n– Looking for patterns is necessary for improving SEO\n– How building your brand will help your SEO\n– User experience is the most overlooked factor in SEO\n– Why you need to monitor your information on other sites\n– How reviews and reputation directly affect your search rankings\n– What factors you should address first if you’re starting from zero \nBe prepared to take notes: this is an information-packed session! \nAbout the Speaker\nJohn Locke got his start in web development and digital marketing after a two decade career working in commercial and retail bakeries\, working his way up from an apprentice to journeyman to manager. He studied web design and web development for two years in between shifts at the bread factory in preparation for the next phase of his working life. \nIn 2012\, he founded Lockedown Design as a web development shop. Later\, after noticing he had a knack for SEO\, he moved the business towards online marketing and search engine optimization. \nWebsite: https://www.lockedownseo.com/\nTwitter: @lockedown_\nYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/johnjlocke

SUMMARY:WordPress Membership Sites 2018
DESCRIPTION:What is a membership site and how do you create one? In WordPress terms\, a membership site is one where you have to sign up (and usually pay) to get access to content. The site where I got this photo is a membership site: you sign up and pay for a subscription that lets you download photos. Newspapers that put up paywalls are also membership sites. Some sites combine membership with other tools\, such as learning management or social networking. \nHow do you build a membership site? There are almost as many different ways as there are sites\, from plugins to third-party services to custom code. We’ll talk about some general considerations when planning and building such a site and some popular membership and content restriction plugins–which are easy to use\, which are easy to customize\, and so forth. \nIf you’ve built a membership site–even a simple one–we want to hear about it! Comment here or email the organizer to join the panel. \nAs always\, we’ll have time to get to know each other and for general WordPress Q & A–plus pizza provided by A2 Hosting.

SUMMARY:Inheriting Other People's Code
DESCRIPTION:When you take over a website that someone else built\, it’s a good idea to review the current setup thoroughly–BEFORE you agree to take a project on\, and certainly before you quote a price for what seems like a simple fix. \nSometimes things really are straightforward\, and the original developer set things up in a way that makes sense and accords with best practices for WordPress development (such as they are). \nBut sometimes you do a code review and wonder “What were they THINKING?” \nCome share your best practices for what to do next when you discover code chaos and the client DOESN’T want to rebuilt the site from scratch. How do you break the news? How do you decide what to do next? What are some things you can improve without having to do a rebuild? \nTell us about the craziest thing you ever encountered when you took over a website–and what you did to fix it.

SUMMARY:WordPress 15th Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:WordPress will be 15th years old this May 27th\, 2018! \nOn Sunday\, May 27th\, we’re planning a global event celebrating the WordPress 15th Anniversary with WordPress community groups around the world. \nYou are invited! We’ll meet at the address listed on this event to enjoy some refreshments (and maybe even a WordPress birthday cake) and celebrate 15 years of WordPress. We’ll be sharing our party photos and love for WordPress with the rest of the world via the hashtag #wp15. \nDon’t forget to spread the word\, let’s make this WordPress birthday memorable 🙂 \nI’m planning to order a WordPress cake\, and WPCS will send us some swag. We can share “I remember when” stories about the early days of WP. \nYou can see what other communities are planning for their events\, as well as download assets for printing swag locally\, on the WP15 website here: https://wp15.wordpress.net/.

SUMMARY:Developing a Color Palette for Your Website
DESCRIPTION:Color is a very powerful tool for branding\, for site appeal\, or for setting a tone. But creating an attractive\, appropriate\, functional palette is a little tricky. We have millions of colors at our disposal\, it can be just overwhelming. We will look at strategies for finding a core color idea\, or manageable starting point. Then we will look at how to refine that initial idea\, and make sure color is working for you\, not against you. \nWe’ll look at color tools\, color spaces\, hex code\, color and type and common color patterns. Finally we will look at testing a color scheme for readability and accessibility issues. \nAbout the Speaker\nAmanda McCoy is a graphic designer who designs websites and print materials for small businesses and professionals. She’s had her own design studio since 2011 and she’s been making WordPress websites since 2014.

SUMMARY:All about Gutenberg with Karla Leibowitz
DESCRIPTION:Bay Area programmer Karla Leibowitz is a full stack developer working on WordPress sites to add custom front and back end features using PHP\, SQL\, and HTML\, CSS\, Javascript and jQuery. She will share her research into Gutenberg: how it works\, how it will alter her development projects\, and how it will impact her clients. \nThis new editor is a significant change in how WordPress content is built and updated\, providing end users more power to create beautiful and elaborate posts. For developers\, its extensible API will allow us to modify the editing experience in a structured and documented manner\, and it will push many of us to modify our coding practice to adopt to this purely JavaScript driven development API. \nAutomattic’s implementation will encourage many of us to step into the more complex development environment of ECMA6 and ReactJS.

SUMMARY:Stop Guessing: Diagnosing & Fixing WordPress Server Performance
DESCRIPTION:Speed matters. People are impatient. If your website or a client’s website doesn’t load quickly – within a just a couple of seconds – many visitors will abandon it completely. A slow site means lost time & revenue. But figuring out how to speed up a slow site can be HARD. \nDiagnosing WordPress performance issues without the proper tools is like searching for buried treasure on the beach without a metal detector. You can spend hours without actually figuring out what’s really going on\, and drive yourself mad at the same time. \nEveryone’s got a suggestion and an idea for how to fix your performance issues. Disable this plugin\, try this\, try that … usually just guesses\, and not based on real data. \nSTOP GUESSING. If you have a performance issue\, or just want to make your site faster\, you need to KNOW exactly what is going on with your actual\, live site in production. Once you are using the right tools\, you will be amazed at what you can see\, and how quickly you can figure out what is really going on. \nWe’ll start by with an overview of WordPress page performance\, and then focus on server response times\, and what affects them. We’ll take a look at how you can use New Relic to figure out exactly what plugins are slowing down your site. \nAbout the Speaker\nMatt Kopala is the founder of WordPress hosting company SiteDistrict\, which hosts the East Bay WordPress Meetup Gutenberg test site.

SUMMARY:Set It and Forget It: Structured Content in WordPress with the Pods Framework
DESCRIPTION:For a content-heavy website\, you have to go beyond the WYSIWYG to focus on what’s important — the content. Structured content helps with consistency in content as well as layout. \nThere are multiple methods of building structured content in WordPress. The Pods Framework is a powerful way to “set it and forget it!” Focus on your content and relax about the layout. \nWe will discuss: \n\nReasons for using Pods over solutions like ACF\nCustom taxonomies and custom post types in Pods\nSetting up Pods templates with “Magic Tags”\nUsing conditionals in Pods templates to format layouts depending on available content\nUsing Pods shortcodes to build pages with structured content\n\nWe’ll run through a case study of an archive website using Pods custom taxonomy\, custom post types\, templates\, and shortcodes on the IA Summit conference website. \nAbout the Speaker\nAnita Cheng is a former cancer scientist who went into tech to help people faster. She dabbled in medical illustration\, graphic design\, then web design before discovering user experience design. She is currently Content Strategist and UX Designer at the SF Mayor’s Office of Housing & Community Development. She is also content strategist\, information architect\, and WordPress guru of this year’s IA Summit conference website\, which she will be demo-ing during the event. She started her web design career with HTML/CSS\, and has added JQuery\, WordPress\, and ASP.NET to her skills.

SUMMARY:Event Management Plugins for WordPress
DESCRIPTION:We’ll talk about why you (or your client) would want an event management plugin and how to figure out which one to use based on your needs. Sometimes you only need a simple list of events or a way to display your Google calendar; other times\, you need multi-day events\, recurring events\, and the ability to sell tickets. \n \nI’ve done a lot of work with Modern Tribe’s The Events Calendar/Events Calendar Pro. Sonja has offered to talk about Events Manager\, and Amanda will share her experience with Event Espresso. \n \nIf you have experience with another event management plugin that you’d like to share\, email me or add a comment below.

SUMMARY:Content Imports and Site Migrations
DESCRIPTION:Note that I’ve scheduled this for the 4th Sunday in September to avoid a conflict with WordCamp Sacramento. \n \nHere’s the problem: the client’s old site is not in WordPress\, but you need to import a ton of content. What do you do? It’s not always easy to bring content from another platform into WordPress\, but it is always possible. \nTopics: \nCMS2CMS \nImporting from HTML with the HTML Import 2 plugin \nImporting WP comments with WordPress Comments Import & Export \nChanging post types with Post Type Switcher \nManaging taxonomies with Term Management Tools \nWP All Import/All Export Pro \nImporting authors to Co-Authors Plus \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFxAzZaeitA \nIf you have experience with complex imports (looking at you\, Anca)\, please volunteer to help present.

SUMMARY:Form Plugins in 2017: Beyond Gravity Forms
DESCRIPTION:There are a lot of new form plugins on the block\, and the market doesn’t seem anywhere near saturated yet. While Gravity Forms has the largest ecosystem of add-ons\, its UI could really use an overhaul and styling is a challenge. Let’s talk about what else is out there and when you might want to use it. \n• Gravity Forms and Third-Party Gravity Forms Plugins \n• Ninja Forms + Extensions \n• Formidable Pro \n• Caldera Forms \n• WPForms \n• CaptainForm \nI’ve used mainly Gravity Forms myself\, though I have some experience with Ninja Forms and Caldera Forms (and I tried CaptainForm once). I will NEED SOME VOLUNTEERS to talk about other form plugins. Email me or comment below if you are interested.

SUMMARY:Build Gorgeous Responsive Layouts with Beaver Builder + Genesis Theme Framework
DESCRIPTION:Several people expressed interest in a meetup on the subject of designing beautiful responsive layouts. Well\, one reason people like page builder plugins is because they make it easier to create page layouts. \n \nThere are serious problems with some page layout plugins\, but Beaver Builder is one of the better ones–and the new Beaver Themer lets you use Beaver page layout to create WordPress page templates (as opposed to just individual pages)\, like Post\, Page\, Archive\, and maybe header and footer too. \n \nPieter Hartsook has been using the combination of Beaver Builder and the Genesis Theme Framework for his client sites\, and has offered to demonstrate creating layouts with (comparative) ease. \nSallie’s note: No plugin will make you an instant designer. If you don’t learn the principles of design\, you’re in danger of recreating GeoCities.

SUMMARY:Making Multisite Work for You
DESCRIPTION:Whether used for a vast and loose affiliation of local chapter websites or a closely-held pool of topical blogs\, WordPress Multisite can be an efficient and effective tool — provided it’s done right. \nIn this session\, we’ll review this sometimes-esoteric technology and highlight appropriate use cases for leveraging it (as well as go over when to avoid it). We’ll also walk through some best practices for setting up and developing for Multisite Networks\, highlighting its strengths\, weaknesses and litany of “gotchas” so you can save yourself some headaches. \nAbout the Speaker\nBen Byrne is one of three cofounders of Cornershop Creative\, a web services agency that plans\, designs\, builds and maintains websites — mostly in WordPress — for nonprofit organizations and educational institutions around the country. As Chief Creative Officer\, Ben oversees most the design and development work that Cornershop does. \nBen has a BFA in Graphic Design from Iowa State University and has been working on the web professionally for about 20 years. He has presented on the difference between print and web design\, web typography\, WordPress widgets\, high performance front-end performance optimization and other topics at various organizations and events\, including several WordCamps.

SUMMARY:Flexbox + CSS Grid: Magic for Responsive Layouts
DESCRIPTION:For me\, CSS Flexbox wasn’t just a discovery\, it was an epiphany. It’s become my number-one tool for responsive layouts\, and I keep discovering new uses for it. If you’re a front-end developer or a designer who codes and you haven’t started using Flexbox yet\, come to this talk to find out how to save time\, save math\, and save media queries. If you build plugins that add new content types (events\, products\, portfolio entries) and ship stylesheets and templates with them\, Flexbox is the easiset way to create layouts to display that content attractively in any theme\, on any size screen. \n \nJoin me for a tour of real-life design problems solved with Flexbox:\n\nVertical centering\nEqual-height columns\nPlacing items at the outside edges of their containers\nAutomatic spacing and sizing of items to fit into a row (no more percentages for widths or margins)\nChanging the order of elements on smaller screens\nWrapping rows so the elements always fill the width of the content area\nNew tricks with margin:auto\n\n \nIntroduction to CSS Grid\nThe new CSS Grid Specification is coming to browsers at the end of March. Although it won’t have widespread support for another year or two\, it’s got amazing potential. It’s also more complicated than Flexbox\, so I’d recommend starting to work with it now. \n \nI’ll show you an example of the simplest implementation of the grid: auto-filling grid cells in the largest number of columns that fits in the content area. If I manage to make any other grids before that\, I’ll show you those too\, but if not\, I will have a list of resources. \nWhy Do You Go to WordPress Meetups?\nThe WordPress Community Marketing Team put out a call for testimonials about WordCamps and Meetups. Tom Cusak has offered to bring his video equipment\, so we’ll take part of the Q&A time for this. \nTestimonial Format\n\nHow long have you been using WordPress?\nWhat brought you to the Meetup?\nHow has coming to this Meetup affected you?
