Things change rapidly in the WordPress world. The content in this post is more than a year old and may no longer represent best practices.
WooCommerce is a robust plugin for selling many types of products, but not as intuitive as one might expect or hope. Give yourself plenty of time to configure it the first time you use it, and prepare for a challenge if you need to handle shipping costs or taxes. Once you’ve dealt with the initial learning curve, however, there is a lot to be said for it, and nothing (yet) that’s really easier if you need to do as many different things. (If you just need to sell downloads, try Pippin Williamson’s Easy Digital Downloads, or look at the new Exchange plugin from iThemes.) And if you don’t need your store integrated into WordPress, you can try a hosted solution like Shopify.
Note: thanks to giving this presentation, Sallie got tagged as the “WooCommerce expert” at the Happiness Bar at WCSF 2013. Building two sites with WooCommerce does not create an expert!
